Muromachi period (1336-1573)
室町時代 muromachi-jidai

Ashikaga Takauji established Japan`s second feudal military government in 1338. The Muromachi shogunate was characterized by a fierce rise in thr power of regional samurai, with no lasting political stability achieved as a result. With an insurrection in 1467 the shogunate lost all real ability to rule, plunging the nation in an age of conflict between rival warlords. Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (reigned from 1368) completed the Golden Pavilion and Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th shôgun who had lost interest in politics completely, built the Silver Pavilion in 1480.
