Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経
(1159-89)

Military commander of the Genji family who was a genius in martial arts and a war hero. He played a leading part in beating the Taira family in Genpei wars 1180-85 - battle of Dannoura. As a child, Yoshitsune practiced austeries in Kurama valley. Legend has it that he trained him self in martial arts with tengu (imaginary goblin). After a priest called Benkei got beaten by Yoshitsune in a fight, he became a loyal follower of him. Yoshitsune died a violent death in 1189 caused by his brother`s Minamoto no Yoritomo's reputation in the northern town of Hiraizumi.
