Edo, the former name of Tôkyô, was derived from Edo Shigenaga, a rising influential figure  who acquired this area as a feudal fief at the beginning od 12 C. Edo-jô castle was founded by Ôta Dôkan at the site of the present day imperial palace. In 1590, Edo castle came under the control of the Edo Shogunate established by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tokugawa redesigned the city with Edo castle strategically located in the center. From then on, Edo City served as the administrative center of the nation for a period spanning 300 years.
