Higashi-honga-ji temple ranks with Nishi-hongan-ji as one of the Jôdo-shinshû sect's
main temples. It was founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu
in 1602 as a rival to Nishi-hongan-ji, which was built by
Toyotomi Hideyoshi; and was
burnt down in 1864 and rebuilt in 1895. The Buddhist hallTaishi-dô
has double roofs in the irimoya
style. The ropes used to transport the timber used in its
construction are said to have been made from the hair of female
followers of the sect.
