Akama-jingû 赤 間神宮
Shimonoseki City

J 239 379a

Akama-jingû is located in Benishi-yama on the Strait of Shimonoseki, just close to the place where six-year old Emperor Antoku and his grandmother threw themselves over board to commit suicid during the naval battle of Dannoura (1185). The shrine is dedicated to the young monarch. He and some important members of the Taira family lie buried within the shrine enclosure.
