"horse picture hall" = ema-dô
- Mishima-taisha shrine
Ema (e = "picture", uma / ma = "horse") means
illustrated wooden plaques given as votive offerings to shrines and
temples. In ancient Japan, there
was the practice
of presenting horses when praying for something, but this later changed
to offering votive pictures of horses. At present, there are other
pictures
besides horses drawn on wood.
