Katô Kiyomasa was a territorial lord (daimyô) and a military leader - who helped both Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu in their attempts to unify Japan - and an excellent architect of castles and fortifications. From 1601 to 1607 he greatly expanded Kumamoto-jô, the castle in Kumamoto City into a castle complex with 49 turrets. Katô Kiyomasa was born in what is now  Nakamura / Nagoya.
