People in Japan are receiving compulsory education at elementary schools (3 years starting at the age of six) and junior high schools (3 years). In 1998 the attendance rate for the nine years was 99,98%. The rate of advancement  to senior high schools  (3 years) stood at 96,8%. The rate of advancement to universities (4 years) and junior colleges (2 years) reached 48,2 %.
