ÔE Kenzaburô 大江健三郎
(1935~)

Ôe Kenzaburô was born in 1935 on the Island of Shikoku as one of seven children. At the age of 18 he moved to Tokyô to study French literature at the University of Tôkyô, which he completed with a dissertation on the work of Jean Paul Sartre. He started to publish essays, stories and novels strongly influenced by French and American literature. Ôe, one of Japans most important authors, was awarded the Nobel Price in 1994.
